29 Jan The Beach House in “Something’s Gotta Give”

I love everything about the movie Something’s Gotta Give, the story line is great, Diane Keaton is amazing as always but what just makes this movie perfect is the Hampton beach house Keaton’s character lives in, it’s to die for!

It wasn’t until I started creating design concepts for clients cottages that I realized I wasn’t alone in my obsession with the Something’s Gotta Give house. For anyone who feels the same this one’s for you.

The house was featured in Architectural Digest, which provided me with some great photos of the what the sets looked like when they weren’t filming on them (photography by Bob Marshak)

If you are looking to use the same paint colour in your home set Decorator Beth Rubino says they were custom-mixed colours that were designed to look good on screen. The lighting is different on a set than it is in a house, so even if you used the same paint, it wouldn’t look the same…

Thanks to Something’s Gotta Give, lots of people were inspired by this design for their own homes. Every home show I went to the following year seemed to have its own version of this look. Interesting fact – The counters were just MDF painted to look like soapstone for the movie, but it started a huge trend. Suddenly everyone wanted soapstone!

I work from home myself, I swooned over Erica Barry’s writing nook at the end of her bedroom. Those windows! Those built-in-bookshelves! This is one of my favorite spots in her house:
